Cleaning your pool deck or driveway

http://concreteflair.com/
Cleaning your pool deck or driveway isn't difficult if you have a spray deck type coating on it. A garden hose and a pool brush is all you need for general cleaning.

For gum, tree sap and other sticky substances, Goof Off works great.

For tire marks, TSP (available at some paint and hardware stores), Nature's Orange or Simple Green work well.

Most spray coatings are mildew resistant, but for shady areas, you might need to wash the areas with a bit of chlorinated water. A bit of pool chlorine or Clorox can be mixed with water and used to wash the affected areas.

For really dirty pool decks, patios or driveways, a light acid wash will clean just about everything else off your deck and brighten up the color. Efflorescence, that can make the coating look white, is easily removed with the acid wash and dirt is bubbled away. Remember to be extremely careful with acid. Add the acid to the water, and don't let the solution dry on your coating. Rinse with lots of clean water to neutralize.

Pressure washing your deck coating is possible, but most people have too strong of a pressure washer. This is best left to a professional.

Remember...Never use paint thinner or paint removers; they will damage your deck!

If you need more detailed instructions, or want someone to acid wash or pressure wash your deck, patio or driveway, give us a call at 281-241-1816!

Pool deck burning your kid's feet?

http://concreteflair.com/
Houston summers get really hot and a pool is the perfect place to cool off. The biggest problem is the deck gets really hot, too. Your guests burn their feet before they get a chance to make it into the pool.

You have options.

Kids will splash water onto the deck, and that works for a bit. A more permanent option is a sprayed on deck coating. Spray-on textured coatings reduce the heat on your deck by around 30% over plain concrete.

This is a very noticable difference. Most commercial pools have a deck coating applied to the concrete to reduce slips and keep they kid's feet from burning.

Besides making your deck more comfortable, the coatings look great. You can coat over pea-gravel, old kool deck, or plain concrete.

This year, cool off your deck before the season heats up!

Cracks in concrete

http://concreteflair.com/
Cracks in concrete are very common, especially in the Houston area. Sometimes a crack is caused by a faulty pour of the concrete, but more often it is due to shifting of the ground.

Houston residents know all about the changes in soil conditions with our droughts and floods. Keeping your ground watered can help, but sometimes that isn't enough.

If your pool deck, driveway or walkway has small cracks, we can coat over them with a textured coating that will hide the imperfections in the concrete. For some areas we recommend scoring the concrete into a pattern that will incorporate the cracks into a design.

Take a look at our Before & After pictures for some examples of our concrete coating work.

Kool deck is looking old...

Kool deck (sometimes referred to as Cool Deck) is a concrete topping that is applied to freshly poured cement. It gives texture and color and is frequently used on pool decks.

If your kool deck has lost its color, you might be able to pressure wash it and apply one of our color seals. If the concrete texture is coming up, you should remove any loose areas and use a product made for existing concrete to patch the areas, then recolor the entire area for a uniform look. For kool deck that is really old, we can remove it and apply a textured coating made to adhere to existing concrete.

Visit our website to see examples of old kool deck that has been updated!

Is your pool deck turning white?

Efflorescence is caused by salts and other materials coming to the surface of concrete. It's brought on by low temperatures, moist conditions, condensation, rain, or dew. It occurs gradually when it comes from within the concrete or more rapidly after exposure to moist or cool conditions. It makes your deck look like a white coating is on it or sometimes like the color has faded.

Great, now what do I do about it?

When done properly, a mild acid solution will take the efflorescence right off and not damage your deck. Mix a solution of 1 part muriatic acid to 8 parts water (up to 1 part acid to 4 parts water if necessary)and apply to a wet deck. Use a pool brush or the equivilent to scrub the deck for really heavy buildup. Let the solution remain until the fizzing stops, then rinse well.
